Policy and Advocacy

While our community partners do the critical work, additional heavy lifting is required to change the toxic stress and realities for women at high risk of experiencing adverse birth outcomes.

First Year Cleveland’s Public Policy and Engagement Committee continues to execute its aggressive public policy agenda, focusing on the priority areas of equity and access and securing resources to address social determinants of health. Explore to take an in-depth look at the progress the Committee has made so far.

Advocate for Families in the State Budget Bill

In 2023, First Year Cleveland actively participated in civic engagement opportunities to support Governor DeWine’s Bold Beginnings Initiative and House Bill 7.  To ensure communication and transparency, First Year Cleveland hosted a statewide webinar to educate community partners on the Bill and its potential impact on the families we serve. Follow the budget process and contact your representative to advocate for resources for families.

Attend our Community Partner Meetings

Our network includes individuals from all sectors that are interested in improving opportunities for families to thrive. The First Year Cleveland Community Partner meetings are an opportunity to learn about the root causes of adverse health outcomes, innovative strategies to address community needs, and opportunities for advocacy to ensure everyone can thrive. We invite anyone interested in the health of Cuyahoga County to join us.

Reach Out to Elected Officials

Contact your elected representatives at local, state, and national levels to encourage their support of legislation and policies that address equity, and to encourage them not to support legislation that negatively impacts human, reproductive, and civil rights.
