CenteringPregnancy® is an evidence-based group prenatal care model that is proven to lead to better health outcomes for babies and mothers – and decrease premature births.

At First Year Cleveland, we want to make sure every baby born in Cuyahoga County celebrates a first birthday. CenteringPregnancy® is making this vision a reality.

CenteringPregnancy is group prenatal care that brings expectant parents together, whose babies are due at approximately the same time, into a comfortable group setting.

The three main components to CenteringPregnancy are:

• Health assessments, during which patients receive one-on-one time with their provider to learn more about their health and to engage in self-care and the care of their unborn child
• Interactive learning, which helps patients become more informed and more empowered to make healthier choices for themselves and their babies
• Community-building during group discussions, during which patients can ask questions and form meaningful relationships with other participants

The CenteringPregnancy model is changing prenatal health care — and is helping mothers and babies across the country.

Studies show that Centering mothers are more likely to deliver healthier, full-term babies. Centering has decreased the rate of preterm births, increased pregnancy spacing (learn more about birth spacing guidelines here) and has nearly eliminated racial disparities in premature birth.

• Fewer after-hour calls to providers and emergency visits, as Centering mothers are more prepared for labor and delivery and better understand what is normal in pregnancy

At FYC, we have seen the effectiveness of the CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care model on patients in Cuyahoga County — and that is why FYC Action Team 7, led by the Cuyahoga County CenteringPregnancy Coalition, is committed to increasing the number of expectant moms enrolled in Centering.

Overall, Centering is a fun, engaging, proven model of prenatal care for expectant parents, providers and babies.
